Message from Our Executive Director

Law schools across the country have been reaching out to IAALS and discussing our Foundations for Practice findings as they contemplate aligning their learning outcomes. To further the conversation, Foundations will be a marquee topic at our 5th Annual Educating Tomorrow’s Lawyers Conference, held in Denver this month, September 22-24. We’ll be discussing Learning Outcomes for Hire: creating and measuring meaningful learning outcomes, and turning them into tangible hiring criteria for employers. We hope you’ll register and join us for these important conversations.

It's All About Implementation—From Recommendations to Reform in our State Courts

In 2013, our state trial courts reported a total of 94.1 million incoming cases. In comparison, there were just 284,604 civil filings in our federal district courts. These statistics reflect the stark reality that the vast majority of civil cases in the United States are filed in our state court system.

It is imperative that our state courts serve the needs of litigants. The Conference of Chief Justices has answered the call to action by adopting the Recommendations of its Civil Justice Improvements Committee last month. Court leaders must now take up these recommendations and implement them around the country to improve the system. To help in that effort, NCSC and IAALS will be collaborating over the next three years to support implementation of these recommendations.

Ideas for Impact from IAALS' Fourth Civil Justice Reform Summit

At our Fourth Civil Justice Reform Summit, we brought together federal and state court judges, court administrators, attorneys on both sides of the “v”, academics, and users of the system to brainstorm a vision for the courts of tomorrow, and steps to get there. Last month, we released the report from that Summit, with a goal to spread its ideas and to help foster positive changes in courts across the country.

It is our hope that these ideas inspire attorneys, judges, our courts, and other members of the system to embrace their role in creating the just, speedy, and inexpensive courts of tomorrow. It is incumbent on us all to ensure that the promise of our justice system is realized for all who need our courts.

The Courage to Build Consensus around Quality Judges

Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb (Ret.) of the Alabama Supreme Court wrote a guest blog for IAALS that recognizes the need to protect our courts from an ever-rising tide of money and politics that threatens to undermine public confidence in the judiciary—and how our Quality Judges Initiative is leading the way.

“Their voice and presence in this national conversation is not only important, it is essential. The consensus they build among diverse stakeholders and their role in providing apolitical research and recommendations make them stand apart from the crowd.”
